A name writes history
The first wine hotel in South Tyrol takes its name from history. The ‘Weinmesser’ was an honourable man and sworn official in the South Tyrol region of Burggrafenamt. It was his duty to calibrate the wine casks and all the vessels used in viniculture. It was also his responsibility to load and unload wines.
Today many farms in Meraner Land still bear the name “Weinmesserhof”, one of them being the Hotel Der Weinmesser in Schenna. The first wine hotel in South Tyrol and its hosts, the Kohlgruber family, have a long tradition in wine-growing and hospitality.

1962
On 15th September, Grandma Hilde and Grandpa Franz Frei opened Pension Weinmesserhof, which had 10 beds and a shared shower. Grandpa Franz managed a small vineyard.
1980
After repeated refurbishments and a gradual increase in the number of beds, the Pension became a 3-star hotel.
1998
Junior Manager Christian and Doris married. Their shared passion for a hotel with a gourmet concept began. Step by step and year by year the couple’s attractive ideas took shape through the refurbishment and extension of the hotel areas.
2010
A year of highlights! The first wine hotel in South Tyrol revealed its new name - Der Weinmesser. Another new name entered Christian and Doris’ 4 walls, and with him a huge slice of family joy - son Leopold came into the world!
2012
50 years of Der Weinmesser! The family, guests and friends raised a glass to this special anniversary. On this occasion, guests enjoyed pleasure-filled moments in the extended lounge area, in the sampling and red wine cellar.
2019
The highest level is attained! Der Weinmesser reveals itself as a 4-star Superior hotel. Stylish adaptations throughout the hotel, with its special pleasure concept, guarantee contemporary lifestyle that reaches out to all the senses.
