Culture in summer
Spring is a great period for
lovers of music and theatre. From 13 to 24 March, the Scena music band and the Scena theatre group entertain the crowds at the Schenner Langes spring festival. Every third Thursday from April to October, the Berger Pfinstig festival offers a mix of popular music, culinary delights and entertaining children’s programmes in the hiking area between Verdins and Merano 2000.
In the month of May, the 5th International Merano 2000 Mountain Run competition takes place, where athletes cover more than 1,700 m difference in altitude. The popular Summer Nights take place in Scena from June to early September and are a lovely occasion to meet people and listen to local bands, taste culinary delights and go wild with some late-night shopping (shops are open until 9.30 pm during this time). From 11 to 13 June, the arty Asfaltart festival in Merano presents clowns, jugglers, pantomimes and trapeze artists, and in July the South Tyrol Classic vintage car rally celebrates its 25th anniversary – an occasion that should not be missed! On 19 August, the extreme mountaineer Hans Kammerlander hosts a Climbing Day, and on 7 and 8 August the Merano Town Festival turns the town centre into one enormous party. The popular Schenner market takes place on 20 August and is a great opportunity to take a look at the handicraft of the local farmers. From 24 August to 27 September, the renowned Merano Music Weeks annually attract fans of classical music, boasting excellent concerts in the classy atmosphere of the Merano spa hotel. Horse aficionados will no doubt enjoy the Grand Prix of Merano, which takes place on 26 September at the horse racing track in Maia Bassa. Later in the year in October, tradition takes centre stage with the famous Toerggelen evenings where the young wine and other traditional food can be tried, or the Schenner Bauernkuchl culinary festival.
